Modeling Colonization of Overwintered Immigrant Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

چکیده
Colonization of potato (Solanum tuberosum [L.]) Þelds by Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), has often been recognized as a process that initially results in an edge-biased spatial pattern. We modeled this spatial process by measuring distance of immigration for individual overwintered adults.Distancewasmeasured to the nearest Þeld edge or to the Þeld edge along a radial vector from the Þeld center. The frequency of beetles captured within 1-m distance intervals wasmodeled as an exponential decay function of distance from the edge for both measurement methods. Expression of the results as a cumulative frequency has management implications for spatial deployment of control measures against immigrating beetles and applicability for spatially explicit simulation of the within-Þeld population dynamics of the beetle. Managers might use such models to estimate the proportion of immigrating adults that would be affected by border treatments of a plant systemic or transgenic insecticide as a function of the width of the treatment.

Colonization of potato fields in eastern North Carolina by Colorado potato beetle
Rotated and non-rotated commercial potato fields were sampled intensively to follow Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), colonization and subsequent oviposition patterns in the spring of 1990 and 1991. Maximum densities of colonizing adults ranged from 0 to 14,891/ha and maximum egg mass densities ranged from 0 to 48,451/ha. Crop rotation generall...

متن کاملResistance to neonicotinoid insecticides in field populations of the Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).
BACKGROUND Neonicotinoid insecticides were first used commercially for Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] control in the United States in 1995, and since then have been critical for management of this pest. Field populations from the northeastern and midwestern United States were tested from 1998 to 2010 for susceptibility to imidacloprid and thi...

The effects of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis applications and early harvest of potatoes on reducing the size of overwintering Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), populations in eastern North Carolina were investigated over 3 yr. In large-plot (0.04 ha) experiments, potato beetle densities and defoliation levels in plots that were either treated with B. thuringie...
